EDM Den interviewed Felix Jaehn, a talented German DJ and producer, after his incredible set in Denver a few weeks ago. The tropical house-infused EDM artist has been making waves with a number of new releases this year, including his latest track, “Never Alone,” which is a collaboration with the Dutch artist, Mesto, and features the Swedish duo, VCATION. After a rocky road to self-love, Felix says he is happy to “…now share my positive energy and my story with the world.” We were very moved by what Felix had to say about his musical journey. Your current tour has been taking you around the U.S. and then to South Africa at the end of the month. Which location have you been the most excited about visiting and what experiences from your travels really resonated with you?
I was excited to visit all of them! Every city is different, every night is different and every audience is different and I try to experience it all to the fullest and live in the present moment. I would say two stops that really stuck in my mind are Boston, because my younger brother lives there and he came to the show and we spent a day off together too. I also really enjoyed the Rocky Mountains. It wasn’t a tour stop but I did a road trip from Denver to Salt Lake City and I had the best time of my life for two days just being in nature. I actually love taking side roads and being so far away from everybody and just being in nature. It’s really cool and a great way to keep the balance right between all the touring.

Do you have any recent projects you’ve been working on?
There’s a super exciting one coming your way in September [released on 9/26/19] it’s called ‘Never Alone’ with Mesto and VCATION and songwriters Michael Zitron and John Martin. It is super important for me, it’s a follow up to ‘Love on Myself’. The lyrics say “you’re never alone and when you feel lost, I want you to know that I’m with you”. I’ve found myself feeling really lonely in the past but I’ve found that you’re never really alone no matter if I’m sitting alone in a hotel room I feel connected to everyone in this planet and universe. You are never really alone but sometimes it’s easy to feel alone being isolated and only in touch with your screens and all of that but I just want all of my fans to know they are never alone and everything is gonna be okay. So this is an important song for me and production wise it’s super fun and it’s a festival anthem. I already played it all summer long at festivals like Lollapalooza Sweden, Tomorrowland, and during my club tour in the US. I can’t wait for it to be out.

You exhibited a TON of great energy during your Denver show this past August — How did you feel about the performance or the scene that night?
Thank you man, I appreciate that. I always try to give 100% on stage and I feel like energy is the most important qualities. It’s also important what kind of tracks I play and how I build the set and kind of tell a story throughout the night with my music. I feel like stage presence is also essential for a good vibe and I definitely got back all of that energy back from the crowd that night. This makes it very easy for me because if I’m performing and the crowd is responding well, they are smiling and dancing, then this gives me so much energy. I perform even harder and dance and have a good time myself. Again, this goes back to the crowd but I feel like that’s how you have the best nights.

What passions or influences have you found most inspiring / beneficial to your journey to international recognition?
There are so many. I think a really important step for me was moving to London when I was 18 years old because I grew up in a tiny village in Germany and I was kind of isolated from the global club scene. I didn’t even really have internet back then, it existed but since I was in a small village it was so slow. So when I was 18 and I moved to London, I had the best internet and I lived in one of the coolest cities for music ever. I had a little residency at this party pub called the Dogstar and I played opening shows at Ministry of Sound and Pacha. I went clubbing every weekend and I studied at a music college so I got so much input which was super important for me at that time.

What musical instruments have you played and have you ever dabbled in other genres?
I played the violin for seven years when I was a kid. I also played at a youth orchestra which was mainly classical music. I haven’t played the violin in quite a long time. Currently I’m not really experimenting with other genres, I like to experiment within dance music and I try different tempos and rhythms but at the moment, at least, it’s always staying within dance music.

You also recently released a new track with Calum Scott, called “Love On Myself,” which has been very well received and praised for its deeper message / influence. What can you tell us about this track?
This track is my most personal release ever. This new album I’m working on I’m also co-writing all of the lyrics. All of the tracks are super personal. “Love on Myself” is a song that’s really close to my heart because it’s about self love and accepting myself. In the past, just like the lyrics say, this was a struggle for me so I’m happy that it’s not anymore and I can now share my positive energy and my story with the world. Hopefully I can inspire many others to love themselves and look inside instead of looking for recognition elsewhere.
Felix Jaehn
How was your experience collaborating with Calum?
It was honestly so amazing, he’s like the nicest guy ever but also very professional. He’s so good and an amazing singer. He was really fun but also so chill so we had an amazing time and I hope we can do another song together at some point. There’s an acoustic version coming up as well that he absolutely nailed so yeah Calum Scott is the best!

Finally, who is your favorite superhero, anti-hero, villain or non-traditional idol?
Finally, who is your favorite superhero, anti-hero, villain or non-traditional idol?
I don’t really have a favorite superhero to be honest, even if that sounds kind of weird. I would love to be able to fly that would be an amazing magic power. To me, flying is freedom, and I want to be as free as the birds. I would probably say Harry Potter right now, he can’t fly himself but when he plays quidditch he can. Maybe it’s just because I watched the movies recently. But yeah, I’d love to fly.
