Interview with Kyle Watson
Your US Summer 19′ tour has taken you all around the states — where have you enjoyed visiting the most and which of your performances (or venues / fan crowds) really resonated with you?
I’ve had some great shows this year. Coda in Toronto was a standout show, so was HARD Summer and my show at Halcyon in San Francisco which I always feel I connect with really well. There have actually been so many good shows it’s hard to water it down to just a few!

You recently released a killer new song with Stace Cadet, “Safe,” – what was it like working on that collaboration? Have you ever worked with Stace Cadet before?
I’m super happy with how Safe came out! I’ve remixed a couple of records over the years that Stace has featured on but I’d never actually worked directly with him on a track. Once I had the instrumental, I felt it was the perfect fit for his unique voice. The process was super easy, everything came together quickly.

EDM Den was fortunate enough to still catch your GDF after-party show at Temple. We thought your sounds were stellar. How’d you feel about the show / cancellation?
Ye that was a shame about the cancellation because I was really looking forward to playing a Denver festival. It’s one of my favourite cities to play. The Temple afterparty was immense though, absolutely max energy I think because of the situation with the weather. One of my coolest shows this year!

You’re set to perform at Meow Wolf in Santa Fe, NM this September — are you excited for the very unique venue? We hope you’ll have an opportunity to check it out before or after the show as it’s one of our favorite music venues in the Southwest (other than our own Red Rocks Amphitheater, of course!)?
This is a bucket list venue to play and I’m really really looking forward to not only playing the show, but also seeing the venue. Really hoping I can make it out there before the show to do a walkthrough. Red Rocks is another bucket list item right there, hopefully that can happen soon 🙂

Do you have any significant musical or professional influences that have inspired you in your career?
Justin Martin was a great inspiration while I was figuring out my sound and where I wanted to take it. I also just dig his fun approach to the whole artistry because I try to keep that going.
Kyle Watson
What musical instruments have you played and have you ever dabbled in other genres?
I played the piano and the drums for a while. Does the recorder count too? Haha! I’ve experimented in other genres for sure, mostly on my Into The Morning album that came out last year. I’ve kept things mostly 4/4 though, I’m feeling inspired within the genre at the moment.

How do you feel about the EDM scene in Johannesburg (or South Africa as a whole) compares to Colorado (or the US as a whole)? Any specific differences? Preferences?
Colorado is on another level right now so hard to compare to most other scenes. But I’ve said in a few other interviews that here in South Africa we have it a little tougher because our currency is pretty weak. We don’t get a ton of international acts coming out, we’re doing ok but obviously nowhere near the scale of the US.
Kyle Watson
What was the wildest music festival or concert you’ve ever attended or played at?
That’s got to be Electric Forest, I walked in there and literally could not believe the scale and attention to detail. The art installations everywhere, the secret corners, the stage production… Just the craziest spot.
Kyle Watson
Do you have any upcoming projects you’re working on? — any plans for collaboration with other producers / artists? — or anything else you’d like to share with your fans?
I have a ton of stuff upcoming, there will be pretty much a new release every month from now through February 2020 so plenty to look forward to.
Kyle Watson
Finally, who is your favorite superhero, anti-hero, villain or non-traditional idol?
Am I allowed to say Deadpool?
Kyle Watson
Most Def.
