LGBTQ+ Influence on EDM + PLUR

Electronic dance music (EDM) has become a global phenomenon that has brought people together from all walks of life. The genre has been popularized by the LGBTQ+ community in the United States and has since grown into a multi-billion dollar industry.

EDM events are known for their inclusivity and acceptance of all people regardless of their background. They provide a space where people can come together and enjoy music without any judgment or discrimination. This has led to the creation of a positive movement in societal growth where people are more accepting of others regardless of their differences.

Role Playing

The LGBTQ+ community has played a significant role in the development and popularization of electronic music in the United States. According to Magnetic Magazine, Frankie Knuckles, who was openly gay, significantly impacted the electronic music scene and was a prominent figure in the LGBTQ+ community. Starting his career in the 1970s, Frankie Knuckles was one of the key figures in the development of house music, a genre that originated in the gay clubs of Chicago.

In addition to Knuckles, there are many other influential LGBTQ+ figures who have made significant contributions to the electronic music industry. For example, Garavelloni and Turco are co-founders of CockTail d’Amore, a monthly party in Berlin that celebrates LGBTQ+ culture.

The queer community existed in disco, electronic, and dance music. For people like David Bowie and Prince, it was the ambiguity of their sexuality that made the community surrounding their music a safe space for queer people. However, these big names in pop and glam Rock are only the tip of the iceberg.

Drawing on this hitherto neglected tradition from LGBT artists of colour, this set of performance artists not only changed attitudes towards the hypermasculine and heteronormative conventions of popular hip hop at the time but it also introduced more electronic music elements to its sound by working with producers like Boody, Matrixxman.
